The Cabin in the Woods - Part two

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

This, the second chapter of our story reveals the questions left unanswered in chapter one. What truly happened in that cabin? Were those vicious dogs that surrounded our cabin? Were they wolves? Were they something else entirely? That frightful night has long since passed, but we have always wondered what led to that terrifying experience. Was it something in the night sky? What about that dog that seemed to lead us to the cabin and those odd yellow eyes? Why, just when all hope was gone did those dogs (or whatever they were) leave as the sun rose in the East? And most of all, what about those dog tags with names of soldiers from so long ago?

We began to research that area and some of the history about it. We found that during WWII, the Army had established a base in the area that was considered special ops. They took the best of the best and stationed them at this remote location. We found old articles of soldiers going through grueling training and tests of endurance. The location seemed perfect, now thinking about it, as there were steep hills and valleys as well as swift running rivers. As we dug further, we stumbled upon articles about leading scientists that were sent to the site as well. There certainly seemed to be much more to this story than originally thought.

With my curiosity peaked, as much as it seemed an impossible thought, I had to go back to that cabin and see if I could uncover any additional clues as to what happened that night. Where as I and my wife were unprepared last time, this time I'd bring supplies and certain equipment that would be able to pick up any unusual activity. Now it was only me. There was no way my wife was going back to that place. I headed back up the mountain on a cloudy day. The air was thick and had a mossy smell to it. Off in the distance, I began to make out a figure. As I got closer, I could see it was that same dog I had encountered years ago. It looked the same as it did back then? Again, it guided me to the location of the cabin. Once in, I settled down and prepared for anything. Nightfall came and so did the lightning and rain. It amplified in the cabin as it hit the tin roof. Hours passed and I heard nothing else. I would occasionally peek out the cabin door and all I could see were clouds and sheets of rain. Morning came and the sun came out. Well that was uneventful I thought to myself.

On the second night that all changed. This night brought a clear sky and a brilliantly bright moon. Again I settled in. It took only a few hours after nightfall when I started hearing noises and footsteps outside the cabin. Not long after that I could hear those same steps on the cabin roof. A chill went down my spine for all of the same memories it conjured up. Oddly, whatever was out there didn't seem to want to harm me. It was almost as if they wanted to communicate with me. It was hard to distinguish if the noises being made were barks, growls or howls. They were noises I was unfamiliar with and had forgotten about. Again, once dawn came the noises ended just like before. I went outside to see if I could see any tracks in the snow, but there were none. Kind of bummed, I began to head down the mountain and after a short while, encountered that same dog who seemed intent on me following him. It was sunny and he seemed to pose no threat, so I did. He brought me to a dense wooded area where I soon noticed something shiny in the snow. It was those same dog tags that my wife and I had seen all those years ago outside the cabin with the same soldiers' names. The dog gave me this odd look almost as if he were trying to tell me something. He barked until I picked up all four tags and then ran off into the forest......
